Carl Hartwig died on 18 October 1879, after 21 years of running his business. The company continued to operate run by Hartwig’s wife and her two proxies: August Dittrich and Edward Hampl, who later became its owners. In December of 1918, Polish authorities purchased the company from A. Dittrich, and on 1 January 1919, the following joint – stock company was entered into the commercial register: “Dom Handlowo-Ekspedycyjny Aktiengesellschaft Speditions und Lagergeschäfte ferner der Handel mit Waren und die Fortführung der Geschäfte der Firma C. Hartwig in Posen". Soon, the company opened its branches in Warsaw, Krakow, Katowice, and Lwów, as well as in Austria and Germany. It had also its representatives in nearly all European countries.
